Eating Disorder Consultations for Families and Coaches

Eating disorders and body image issues do not discriminate. Regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation, someone can develop a disordered relationship to food and eating.
Some sports and activities are higher risk than others for these issues to develop. Athletes and performers who have eating disorders struggle with anxiety, self-doubt, and low self-esteem fueled by severe body image issues, excessive comparison to others and an intense drive for perfection. If left untreated, eating disorders can be debilitating, leading to poor performance, injuries, the loss of one’s sport or activity or worse.

Physical therapists, physicians, dietitians, coaches, trainers and, of course, family members are often the first ones to notice something is not quite right. Chronic injuries or loss of energy. Suspicious comments about one’s body weight or shape. Certain behaviors while eating or after eating that seem odd. Excessive weighing or body checking. Going well beyond what is required for physical training or practice. Rigid thinking about refueling needs. These can all be red flags that something more serious may be going on.

Navigating the nuances of what constitutes a disordered relationship to food, body and exercise can feel overwhelming. It can be confusing trying to fully understand the situation and know when it’s time to refer to an eating disorder professional or to a treatment center and which level of care is most appropriate for a given athlete or performer at a particular time.

Brad has been an executive director of two different eating disorder treatment centers. Prior to launching Austin Sports Behavioral Health, he opened a therapy and supervision practice with a focus on treating eating disorders and body image issues and training post-graduates to work with these clinical concerns. Brad brings to the consulting process over two decades of experience providing eating disorder therapy to individuals, groups, families and couples in outpatient, partial hospitalization and residential levels of care. He also understands the unique culture of sports and how it impacts eating and body image. Brad has treated eating disorders in male and female athletes of all ages, from grade school to college to professional. His goal is to ensure that the athlete or performer struggling with an eating disorder and body image issues receives the care they need so they can return to their sport or activity stronger, more focused, and with a healthier relationship to food.

Consultations with Brad are not therapy or clinical supervision, but rather a collaborative process whose primary goal is developing a plan that ensures the treatment needs of the athlete or performer are adequately addressed. Consulting can occur with the client, family members, other clinicians, coaches or a combination of those invested in the client’s performance and well-being. During the consulting process, Brad will conduct a thorough assessment of the client’s history of and their current struggles with eating, weight, body image and exercising so that an appropriate recommendation can be made.

The fee for a consultation is $275/hour.
